On April 3, 2024, John passed away to experience peace and an absence of pain – effectively cancer free for the first time in many years. John began fighting cancer about two decades ago when he was diagnosed with Melanoma (skin cancer). In 2016 he received news that the cancer had spread to his brain and was told he only had six months to live. John defied all odds and fought cancer for eight more years – seven and a half more incredible years that no one could’ve predicted. He fought in every way that he could, participating in treatments and surgeries, so that he could spend more time with his family – especially his three grandchildren that he so deeply loved. In March 2024, three new tumors were found within his brain that unfortunately brought about his final fight.
Beloved father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, John was born on August 12, 1959, in Iraan, TX in Pecos County. John grew up to be an extremely educated man holding a bachelor’s degree in accounting and a master’s degree in finance at the University of Houston and went on to get his JD at Ohio State University. John was licensed to practice both law and public accounting in the state of Texas. In his spare time, he found joy in three hobbies – flying, dancing, and traveling. John procured his pilot’s license in 2002 and enjoyed piloting planes to fly not only by himself, but also with family and friends. Some would even say he flew a plane better than he could drive a car. John was also blessed to be a very well-traveled man as he traveled all over the world including some of his favorite places: Indonesia, the Philippines, and many countries in South America. Finally, it is important to note that John had mad skills on a dance floor. One of his favorite past times to the very end was going dancing with numerous beloved friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, John Dewitt Greer and Elwanda Hatfield Davis, and his sister, Mitzi Elwanda Greer. He is survived by his children, Jimmy Greer and wife Ashley of Houston and John Greer of Jacksonville; Also survived by siblings, Joe Greer and wife Rhonda of Midland, and Regina Gross of Grove, OK. He is also survived by three grandsons who he most adored, Jameson Greer, Jace Greer, and Jagger Greer of Houston.
John was loved and survived by numerous nieces and nephews: Joe Greer Jr. of Midland, Jacob Greer and wife Caroline of Bryan, Larry Gross and wife Shelly of Grove, OK, Amanda Bryan and husband John of Welch, OK, Misty Smith of Lake Livingston, and Jennifer Boggs and husband Zach of Magnolia.
Serving as pallbearers will be Jimmy Greer, Joe Greer Sr., Joe Greer Jr., Jacob Greer, Curtis Smith, and Larry Gross.
If you would like to honor John’s earthly life, please donate to the Tunnel of Towers Foundation and the Camp Hope PTSD Foundation of America in lieu of flowers to honor the organizations that John himself was dedicated to supporting.
