Monnie McSpadden

November 19, 1912 — February 16, 2015

Monnie Ray (Monte) McSpadden, age 102, passed away February 16, 2015 at the McCamey Convalescent Center.

Graveside services will be held at 2:00 P. M. Wednesday February 18, 2015 at the Rankin Cemetery under the direction of Shaffer-Nichols Funeral Home of Crane.
Troy Strickland will preside over the services.

Monte was born November 19, 1912 on a ranch near Buena Vista, in Pecos County to Ussery Hestand Powell and James Whitfield Powell, the first of five daughters. She was a graduate of Rankin High School in 1932 where she excelled at tennis. She married her high school sweetheart, R. D. McSpadden who preceded her in death in 1955. They remained in Rankin where they raised their family of two daughters, Barbara Janice and Neva Zoe both deceased, and one son, Walter Rae.

After R. D’s death she was employed by Johnson’s Department Store for a number of years later working for Upton County as Justice of the Peace, then for the Rankin Hospital as cook and completing her workdays as housekeeper.

Monte was a member of United Methodist Church of Rankin.

Monte enjoyed many activities. As long as her health permitted she went hunting and fishing, she was an outstanding cook and candy maker. She took up oil painting when she was 65 and her family and friends hang her paintings proudly in their homes. She was an avid reader, a staunch supporter of the Rankin Red Devils especially when her kids, grandsons and great grandsons were involved, and enjoyed coffee daily with a group of ladies for about fifty years, until they were all well into their 90’s.

Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband, two daughters, and two grand-daughters and all four of her sisters.

Survivors include her son Walter Rae and wife Barbara McSpadden of Rankin, grandsons Steve and wife Penny McSpadden of Rankin, Gary McSpadden of Odessa, and Robert Clay and Guy Dee Nesbitt of the Dallas area; granddaughter Nicole Bennett and husband Greg of Santa Fe, N. M. two great grandsons Kevin and wife Karen McSpadden of San Angelo and Dr. Tyler and wife Sterling McSpadden of Temple; and two great granddaughters Erin Hobbs of Lubbock and Paige Carrera of Rowlett and a number of nieces, nephews and many friends some of whom have been her caretakers the past few years.
