Obituary

Patricia “Kay” Johnson was born December 17, 1946, in McCamey, Texas, to Jimmy Kay and Mary Lou Bolen. She grew up in Big Lake and married her high school sweetheart, Ike Low, with whom she welcomed their son, Jimmy Brian. In 1979, Kay married Wally Johnson, and they made their home in Rankin for the next four decades. During their 43 years of marriage, they raised Kay’s son, Jimmy, and their youngest son, Coley. Kay served as the director of the Senior Center for 20 years and was a faithful member of First Baptist Church in Rankin for over 40 years.

In 2019, Kay and Wally moved to Abilene to be near the family she cherished so deeply. A woman who loved life in vibrant color—especially her favorite shades of pink—she found joy in the simple beauty of nature. She took special delight in hummingbirds, watching them flutter through her yard and featuring them in the decor of every single room of her home. After losing her husband in 2022, Kay was blessed with the constant companionship of her lifelong best friend, Melissa Browning. The two were an inseparable force, bringing easy smiles and giggles to everyone they encountered. Known for her boundless generosity and open heart, Kay never met a stranger, and her happiest moments were always spent surrounded by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Kay was preceded in death by her parents, Jim and Mary Bolen; her sister-in-law, Pat Bolen; and her husband, Wally Johnson.

Kay is survived by her son, Jimmy Low, and wife, Lori, of Fort Worth; her son, Coley Johnson; her stepson, Kevin Johnson, and wife, Stephanie, of Abilene; her stepdaughter, Amy Torres, and husband, Lupe, of Robert Lee; her brother, Bill Bolen, of San Angelo; her brother, Roy Bolen, and wife, Debbie, of Midland; her brother-in-law, David Mack Johnson, and wife, Lynn, of San Angelo; and her sister-in-law, Jan Adams, and husband, Henri, of Miles. She is also survived by her beloved grandchildren: Anton Low, Presley Low, Gavin Johnson, Asher Johnson, Avery Johnson, Zachary Johnson, Ezekiel Johnson and wife, Kinlie, Noah Johnson, Ashlie Wheat, Jessie Martinez and husband, Travis, JT Cary and wife, Lisa, Grace Cary, Faith Cary, and her great-grandchildren Jagger, Judson, Spencer, Wren, Colleen, and John Mark.

A graveside service will be held at the Texas State Veterans Cemetery at Abilene (7457 West Lake Rd., Abilene, TX) on October 30th at 11:00 AM. A reception and celebration of Kay's life will be held immediately following the interment at Covenant Presbyterian Church (2743 Buffalo Gap).
